We have gotten a lot of questions and concerns with owners asking us about alternatives to opiods and pain relief medication for their pets. Is Tramadol or CBD for pain better for my pet? I want to preface this post first by saying, that I am NOT a veterinarian and I also do not have all the answers when it comes to your pets health and what you should do. Concerns with your pet should be talked over with your vet and you can make up your own mind on what is best for your fluffy one. Okay, all that out of the way, (don’t you just love disclaimers), let’s talk about pain meds. Taken from AKC, Tramadol is described as,
” A medication veterinarians commonly dispense to manage pain in dogs. Physicians also frequently prescribe tramadol for human aches and pains, and it is one of the few human painkillers that is safe to give to dogs under the guidance of a veterinarian.”
Now, if you haven’t heard of Tramadol or used it, here are a few things that Veterinarians might prescribe it for:
- Nonsurgical intervertebral disc disease
- Post-operative pain
- General pain from an injury or another condition
Canine degenerative myelopathy (progressive disease of the spinal cord)
Obviously, just as they do in humans, you get side effects. Some are slight and some seem worse than the drugs supposed benefits. We have all seen those commercials about “The new and fancy drug that just came out for heart disease or anxiety” and then proceed to list off a thousand side effects. Your anxiety will be lessened BUT your probably going to throw up once a day and have diarrhea for the rest of your life, oh an maybe forget your name and what spoons are for. Is that cool?
Now take a look at a report that came out last year that shows a study that Tramadol has found ineffectiveness with treating osteoarthritis in dogs. No we are not sponsored or anything by any of these other sites and if you do additional research, this will not be the only article you will find questioning the abilities of Tramadol. Desiree, Stones mom (remember hes an actual dog), had given one of her other pups Tramadol in the past and he had major adverse effects like vomiting and diarrhea. Sounds like a hangover after a ladies brunch on Saturday and no one wants to feel that way.
CBD as an Alternative?
CBD, Just as in people, has shown to be effective with some of the above symptoms in dogs. All dogs are different just like humans so dosage and the affects of CBD vary but lets look at this a bit more. Tramadol vs CBD seems like a no brainer when you look at the possibilities of CBD as apposed to the helpfulness of Tramamdol and then weigh out all the side effects on top of that. Sure, maybe your saying CBD won’t work for your pet or somethng, but whats the point in not trying it? Because its hippy dippy magic? No, not the case at all. Scientists have been taking apart the Marijuana plant for decades to understand all the benefits and diverse affects it does as I am sure they will find even better qualities in the near future. CBD ( Cannabidiol ) is one of the 104 chemical compunds found in the Hemp plant and has shown to help with a bunch of ailments. Things like:
- Chronic Pain and Inflammation
- Heart Ailments
- Social Anxiety
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Skin Conditions
- Muscles Aches (This one for sure because it works flawlessly on me for that)
- Certain Types of Cancer
Will CBD get your Dog High?
I get this all the time….NO! Legal graded CBD that you buy now in the USA has to have standards before they sell it. It can only contain less than .3% THC (the part the actually gets you high) to actually be legal so there are no worries on getting your pets high. Just consult the 2018 Farm Bill link on the bottom of our info page to check out the proof.
So to sum all those facts together and draw up a conclusion but just do one thing. Look at all the side effects and bad crap that Tramadol or other Pain relief medications have, then look at the benefits list for trying CBD. I am not a math genius but… come on. Now stop reading and go buy some right now. Have a good one!
